DERA GHAZI KHAN, June 13: Police arrested nine leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) from their houses on Wednesday. Their arrests are believed to be linked with a rally and a divisional convention of lawyers which will be addressed by Supreme Court Bar Association President Muneer A Malik and Ahmed Ali Kurd today (Thursday).
The arrested office bearers were shifted to Civil Lines police station.
The arrested leaders include: DG Khan Senior Vice President Allah Nawaz Babar, General Secretary Muhammad Iqbal Bhutta, Councillor Muhammad Akbar Malkani, Divisional People’s Labour Bureau President Ghulam Abbas Gurchani, City PPP President Tahir Fareed Babar, Tehsil Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam President Maulana Kamil Masood, MMA’s Qari Jamal Abdul Nasir and Maulana Noor Muhammad Aajiz and Jamaat-i-Islami’s Safdar Qureshi.
Six leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and PPP were arrested two days ago and shifted to the Sahiwal Central Jail. Police said they were arrested under the 16 MPO for three months.
HANGED: A murder convict was hanged on Wednesday morning at the district jail here.
According to prosecution, Javed Akhtar Khan, a resident of Jampur, had murdered his cousin Allah Rakha over the suspicion of illicit relations with his wife on October 2, 1998.
The Jampur additional district and sessions judge had handed down death sentence to him with Rs100,000 fine.
The Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court upheld the decision of lower court.
