KARACHI, June 10: For the first time in Pakistan, computerised draft electoral rolls are set to be displayed from Tuesday in 45,403 display centres across the country at the union council level, officials told Dawn.
The Draft Electoral Roll (DER) has been prepared by the Election Commission of Pakistan in collaboration with the International Foundation of Election System (IFES).
Inclusion, correction and objection claims are to be received from June 12 to July 3, EC secretary Kunwar Dilshad, told Dawn.
The Election Commission has established 11,047 display centres in Sindh to facilitate eligible voters and 45,403 display centre information officers, mostly teachers, have been appointed throughout the country.
As many as 144 registration officers/assistant election commissioners have been appointed in the country, including 27 registration officers for Sindh. A total of 2,240 assistant registration officers have been appointed in the country to maintain and monitor display centres.
Officials said the IFES had been facilitating the Election Commission in voter education, training and preparation of ballot boxes. Banners, posters and pamphlets have been prepared and are being disseminated within community, political activists, elected representatives, religious leaders and councillors.
People of or above the age of 18 years on Jan 1, 2007, and having CNIC or NIC can be enrolled as voters. According to sources, three registers for entries and three types of forms would be kept at those display centres and display centre information officers will facilitate people in filling up the forms. Form IV for inclusion, Form VI for correction and Form V will be used for objection over any registered voter but the objector should have the same constituency.
According to Mr Dilshad, the process for inclusion of fresh names in the lists would take around three months and complete and ‘foolproof’ lists would be issued in September.
