12 killed as coach falls into ravine

PESHAWAR, June 10: Twelve people were killed and 10 others injured when a passenger coach fell into a ravine near Batkhela in the Malakand region around 3.00am on Sunday.

The coach (Swat C 4049) was headed for the northern Chitral district. The driver lost control of the steering while taking a sharp turn in a hilly area about 140km north of Peshawar.

Most of the dead belonged to the Chitral district. A couple, Wazir Ahmad and Shehnaz Wazir, belonged to Abbottabad district. Three dead women could not be identified.

Malakand Levies personnel arrived at the spot and retrieved the dead and the injured people from the coach’s wreckage.

The injured were taken to the Batkhela Hospital from where some of the more seriously injured patients were shifted to Peshawar.
