NAWABSHAH: Mercury rises to 49 in Nawabshah

NAWABSHAH, June 8: A large number of people, including women and children, fainted due to scorching heat in Nawabshah and surrounding areas where temperature rose to 49 degrees Celsius on Friday.

The residents of Nawabshah experienced the hottest day of this summer. Many sunstroke cases were reported at different hospitals of the district. Bazaars and trade centres wore deserted look as people preferred to remain indoors.

A heat wave has gripped the city and surrounding areas for the last fortnight.

Meanwhile, more than 35 new cases of gastroenteritis were reported at different hospitals and health centres of the district. About 20 cases were reported at the Nawabshah Medical College Hospital and 15 at other health centres.

SUICIDE BID: A robbery accused tried to commit suicide in the Qazi Ahmed police station police lockup on Friday allegedly due to police torture.

Ali Khan Jamali tried to cut his neck with a piece of glass but other inmates of the lockup foiled his suicide bid. He received minor injuries.

The duty officer of the police station took him out of the lockup for treatment. The police have registered a suicide attempt case under section 325, PPC.

The accused is under a seven-day remand in a bus robbery case. Sources said that police torture had forced him to try to commit suicide. But, the police said that the relatives of the accused were not contacting him due to which he got upset and tried to commit suicide.
