Benazir slams media curbs

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, June 6: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairperson Benazir Bhutto on Wednesday condemned what she said far-reaching restrictions slammed on private TV channels.

In a statement issued here, she said by taking such steps against the media the regime was demonstrating intolerance which would undermine the attempts to create a pluralistic and diverse society in the country.

The former prime minister said her party was particularly pained at the repressive steps taken against the media. The PPP, she added, would support the journalists in their struggle for press freedom.

She said the actions against the press were one of desperation. She called upon the media to unite as it would be impossible for the regime to shut down all the TV channels.

Ms Bhutto said the PPP was proud of the courage shown by the vast majority of the members of the media who have been killed, kidnapped, assaulted, threatened; suffered physical intimidation and been victims of terror attacks but still kept up the flag of press freedom.
