KOHAT, June 6: The National Accountability Bureau, NWFP, on Tuesday raided the driving licence office on complaints of issuance of fake licenses and confiscated the record, a source told Dawn here on Wednesday.

The raiding team, headed by Group Captain Saleem, closed the office and stopped the staff from leaving the room.

DSP Jalaluddin was also detained along with other staff from 12:30pm to 6pm, the source said.

The NAB staff took away the record and summoned the staff to Peshawar on Wednesday for recording their statements.

The NAB had received complaints of extortion by the staff of the driving license branch and issuance of fake licenses.

In some cases, licenses were issued on recommendations of senior bureaucrats and politicians, the source said.

It was learnt that DSP Jalaluddin, DPO office’s head clerk Haji Jalil, junior clerk Ghaniur Rehman and clerk Zarwali were asked to appear before the staff of the provincial NAB headquarters on Wednesday.

According to the source, the license branch had also been preparing licences for non-custom paid vehicles smuggled from the nearby tribal areas in connivance with the staff of the excise and taxation department.
