KARACHI, June 6: The Labour Party Pakistan (LPP) staged a protest demonstration in front of the Karachi Press Club on Wednesday against curbs on the media and a crackdown on political workers.
A large number of party workers, including women, holding banners and placards in their hands, raised slogans in favour of free judiciary and free press. They also condemned the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority for serving as a government arm to gag the press.
Chairperson of LPP Karachi Shehla Rizwan, claimed that days of the military government and its allies were now numbered, adding that democracy had to prevail in the country.
She warned all political parties against bargaining with the dictators, and felt certain that the government would respect the will of the masses and lift all curbs on the media, besides restoring independence of the judiciary by withdrawing the presidential reference against Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.
