LHC moved against commanders

LAHORE, June 5: The Pakistan Lawyers Forum on Tuesday filed a constitutional petition in the Lahore High Court seeking directives to restrain corps commanders from getting involved in political activities.

The PLF through its president A.K. Dogar advocate also requested the court to declare Gen Pervez Musharraf liable for an action under article 6 of the Constitution read with section (b) of High Treason (Punishment) Act, 1973 for subverting the Constitution by show of force.

The petitioner made the federation of Pakistan, Gen Musharraf and corps commanders parties and requested the court to direct the federation to initiate action against the corps commanders and principal staff officers who on June 1 had subverted the Constitution by force. They had been liable to be penalised under the article 6, he argued.

The petitioner contended that he had been prompted and moved to file the petition after reading newspapers on June 2 that top military brass at a conference of the corps commanders and principal staff officers held on June 1 at the GHQ took serious notice of “malicious campaign against state institutions launched by opportunists for their vested interests”.
