KPC assails ordinance

Published June 6, 2007

KARACHI, June 5: A meeting of the governing body of the Karachi Press Club on Tuesday criticised the promulgation of Pemra Ordinance imposing fresh restrictions on the electronic media. It condemned the registration of cases against journalists for taking part in a demonstration against media curbs in Islamabad.

It condemned the action taken by the government to block the launching of Dr Ayesha Siddiqua’s book -– Military Inc -– in Islamabad and made an offer to the author to launch the book at the Karachi Press Club.

The meeting expressed concerns over the mafia-like threats -- envelopes with live bullets pasted on cars of three members of the KPC last week.

The governing body urged all its members and the journalist community to remain steadfast in their commitment to report objectively, honestly and fairly without any fear or favour.

It urged the leadership of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists and its affiliated unions to mobilise the community in all small cities and towns against what it called growing fascist tendencies of state institutions. The governing body proposed to the PFUJ and the KUJ to consider holding a rally from the KPC to Mazar-i-Quaid next week.
