Storm, rain forecast

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, June 4: Strong winds and light showers have been forecast for the city under the influence of a moderate tropical cyclone (nicknamed Gonu) which, passing near the Pakistan coast, will proceed towards the coast of Oman in the next couple of days.

According to the meteorological office, the Gonu was reported at around 600 kilometres southwest of Karachi in the central Arabian Sea and was moving at a speed of between 8 and 10 knots in the north-westerly direction.

Keeping in view its present direction, says the met office announcement, no land area of Pakistan is under its threat. However, scattered rain and thundershowers with gusty winds may occur along the Sindh-Makran coast, and lower and upper Sindh over the next 48 hours.

The sea conditions are likely to be rough and, therefore, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the open sea beyond 50km from Sindh-Balochistan coasts in the next 36 hours.
