HYDERABAD, June 4: Several areas of the city went without water in the sizzling heat for well over 24 hours after four water supply lines were broken in the course of laying a sewer near Kohinoor Cinema intersection on Sunday evening.

Wasa Managing Director Mishraz Siddiqui said the supply would hopefully be restored by night. It was learnt that four lines of seven to 12 inches diameter were broken when labourers were laying sewers under Hyderabad Development Package (HDP) near Kohinoor Cinema intersection on Sunday evening.

Around 40 to 45 feet of water pipelines were damaged and the water supply from main reservoirs i.e. 30 MGD water filter plant of Wasa had to be suspended.

The suspension of water supply seriously affected life in Mumtaz Colony, Doaba police line, Old campus, Holmstead hall, portion of Pucca Qilla, Bhai Khan ki Chari, Station Road, Khokhar Mohallah, Qazi Qayyum Road, Resham Gali, Lajpat Road and the areas located on the right side of Hyder Chowk.

"We have not got water since Sunday evening and apparently there are no chances that supply will be restored by Monday night. The authorities remain unmoved about our plight although they have been informed about it," said Adnan Sheikh, a resident of Khokhar Mohallah.

The Wasa MD claimed that they had made efforts to avoid damage to the four water supply lines but it could not be avoided because of closely knitted system of different lines including gas lines.

"We have been trying to contact authorities and each time we are told that the pipeline will be repaired soon," said a resident of Lajpat Road, Mohammad Zaki.

He said that his brother had contacted an official who informed him that the pipelines would be repaired by Monday night.
