Wapda workers stage demo

Published June 5, 2007

SAHIWAL, June 4: Hundreds of Wapda workers on Monday staged a protest demonstration outside the local Press Club under the aegis of Paigham Union. Speaking at the protest rally the union office-bearers Amjad Khan and Muhammad Saeed Ashraf said the Hydroelectric Union (HEU) as the collective bargaining agent (CBA) failed to safeguard the Wapda employees’ interests. They alleged that HEU’s policies caused resentment among the workers.

They said under the HEU, the recruitment of the employees’ children in Wapda was discouraged and the ordinance of 2002 was still like sword of Damocles for the employees.

They also deplored the 10 per cent reduction made in the free power units’ supply to the workers.

They claimed that Pagiham Union, after attaining the status of the CBA, would strive for protecting workers’ interests.

They vowed to publish a white paper on the alleged excesses committed by the HEU against the Wapda workers.
