Man hurt in hospital explosion

By Ibrahim Shinwari

LANDI KOTAL (Khyber Agency), June 1: An employee of the Agency Headquarters Hospital was slightly injured when an explosive device placed in front of the office of the hospital’s medical superintendent went off on Friday.

The explosion damaged windowpanes of nearby offices and wards and also a newly-renovated resource centre for children. The blast was heard far and wide. The casualty was limited because most of doctors and other hospital employees had gone for Friday prayers when the explosion occurred.

Soon after the explosion, the local Khasadar force cordoned off the hospital premises. A case was registered against unknown people. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the blast.

However, sources in the hospital told Dawn that a former president of the union of paramedical staff had developed differences with the hospital management over renovation of the children’s resource centre.

It is learnt that officials of the health department had expelled members of the union from the resource centre where the union had established its office without permission.

The resource centre had been established with assistance from Save the Children, UK.
