Ganga named WI skipper

LONDON, June 1: Jamaica batsman Marlon Samuels was summoned to the West Indies cricket squad to replace injured captain Ramnaresh Sarwan on Thursday. Daren Ganga, the vice-captain who took over the West Indies in the second Test at Headingley after Sarwan damaged his shoulder in the field last Friday, was named captain.

Samuels has played 23 Tests. His last Test was a 49-run defeat to India in Jamaica in July last year. He also played in the recent World Cup.

Without Sarwan, the West Indies batted one man short and fell to their worst Test defeat – an innings and 283 runs on Monday. Sarwan returned home on Wednesday.

“It’s unfortunate for Sarwan to get injured but it’s an opportunity for us to rally around each other and make West Indians proud,” Ganga said.—AP
