KARACHI, June 1: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal said that development work on K-IV water supply project would begin by the end of the current year. Chairing a meeting of the city government officials and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) here on Friday, he said that some 27 ongoing projects of laying trunk lines would be completed by December this year.

He admitted that due to an improper water distribution system certain areas of the city were facing water shortage but after the completion of 27 trunk line projects there would be a visible improvement in the city’s water distribution system.

Mr Kamal said that only four trunk lines had been laid after 1947 to supply water to various areas of the city of which two trunk lines were laid in 1988 during the tenure of former mayor Dr Farooq Sattar.

He said in the absence of trunk lines it was very difficult to supply water to far-flung areas and the city government realising this problem had started work on the very project.

The nazim maintained that agreement for installation of two desalination plants of 70mgd each had been inked with foreign firms.

The city government would also start work on a project costing Rs8 billion for the treatment of 500 million gallon sewage before it went into the sea, he added.

During the meeting, the nazim was also briefed about various ongoing projects particularly in Lyari and Manzoor Colony areas.
