Waugh may take new role

MELBOURNE, May 30: Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh is likely to take up a new role — mentor of national football team for its Asian Cup campaign. With vast experience of playing against Asian teams in high-pressure encounters, Waugh might prove a perfect motivator for Aussies in the tournament to be held in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam from July 7 to 29.

He is enthusiastic on possibility of talking to squad on pressures of entering a tournament as favourites and playing a competition in Asia.

A deal could be signed with Waugh, who will spend some time with team this week before friendly with Uruguay on Saturday.—Agencies
