KARACHI: Khuhro assails speaker

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 29: Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmad Khuhro on Tuesday condemned the ruling of Acting Speaker Rahila Tiwana who prorogued their requisitioned session even before offering prayers for the victims of the May 12 violence.

Mr Khuhro, who was addressing a crowded press conference in his chamber on Tuesday, said that the opposition had requisitioned the session with the signatures of 44 MPAs, which had been convened on May 25 but was later postponed.

When the House was convened on May 29, Sindh Assembly Speaker Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah, despite returning from Canada, did not attend and instead sent a personality (referring to the deputy speaker) who was known for her ignorance of the rules of business, he said.

He claimed that she deliberately ignored Mohammad Hussain, who was standing along with 15 members from the treasury benches, disturbing the proceedings. He also said that the ruling by the chair for the removal of the placards with anti-government slogans was beyond the rules of business.

“We decided to requisition the session when the Sindh government refused to hold an inquiry into the tragic events of May 12. Not only Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim but Gen Pervez Musharraf also rejected the demand saying “forget about an inquiry,” he said.
