Nasir shocks Jalil to reach semi-finals: Anti-Tobacco Day Tennis
KARACHI, May 28: Jalil Khan was stunningly defeated by Nasir Mushtaq in a quarter-final of the Anti-Tobacco Day tennis championship at the Karachi Club on Monday. Davis Cupper Jalil fought gallantly to capture the opening set 7-6 on tie-breaker. However Nasir in an impressive display of ground strokes outplayed Jalil to take the second set 6-2 and playing with rising confidence captured the third set 6-3 to storm into semi-finals.
Another ex-Davis Cupper Nomi Qamar defeated Khalid Ali Nazar in another quarter-final to cruise into the last-four round.
Nomi won the first set 6-3 but Khalid came back strongly in the second set and grabbed it 7-7 on tie-breaker.
Khalid kept Nomi under pressure in the decider in tense and hot condition but the latter held his nerves to seal the fate of the quarter-final by snatching the set 7-5.
Top-seed Aqeel Khan proved too strong for Abbas Raza as he outplayed him 6-1, 6-0.
Aqeel’s younger brother Yasir Khan also joined him in the semis with a straight forward 6-3, 6-2 win against Ali Zubair Surmawala.
In ladies singles, Sara Ahmed thrashed Maheen Dada 6-0,
6-0 and Sahar Khawaja whip-ped Shameen Irfan 6-1, 6-1.
