KARACHI: PML-Q in awkward position after May 12, says Abida

KARACHI, May 28: Begum Abida Hussain, a frontline leader of the Pakistan People’s Party has said that the civil and military officials having committed violation of constitution to help Gen Pervez Musharraf perpetuate his rule must be held accountable for their crime.
Talking to newsmen here on Monday, she deplored the May 12 mayhem in the city and the imposition of a ban on Imran Khan to enter Sindh.
She observed that leaders of the ruling PML were disturbed after the mayhem and most of them were finding it difficult to face their voters for support in the upcoming election as many dead bodies had reached their constituencies. These leaders, she added, were worried about the tarnished image of the government after the bloodshed.
Begum Hussain claimed that the PML-Q legislators were also skeptical over heavy reliance on Gen Pervez Musharraf’s ‘second skin’ to rig the elections.
She observed that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz had no stakes in Pakistan and he would be able to take refuge in his New York or London apartments. Most of the ruling party legislators who had elected Shaukat Aziz had no home in a foreign country so they would have to live in the country and face the people, she added.
The PPP leader alleged that Gen Musharraf also owned a costly farmhouse in Islamabad and a bungalow in Karachi.
Commenting on the May 12 events, Begum Abida Hussain said: “I witnessed the May 12 terrorism and I have a feeling that it’s the beginning of the creation of Jinnahpur. I could not imagine that they may be so heavily armed and entrenched when our caravan was fired upon near Ayesha Bawani from all directions, leaving many people dead and scores of others injured.”
She asked why Gen Musharraf refused to hold an inquiry into the tragedy, and said: “This proves that he knew about the MQM plan.”
Referring to the MQM’s outburst against Imran Khan, she said: “He is a world famous figure. She said he would be filing a case in London against MQM chief Altaf Hussain.
