China’s gold medal haul swells


ZAGREB, May 27: China's gold medal haul at the world table tennis championships swelled to three here on Saturday with wins in the women's singles and men's doubles.

Among the women Guo Yue defeated compatriot Li Xiaoxia 8-11, 11-7, 4-11, 2-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-8.

Wang Liqin came off second best in the men's doubles final as he and Wang Hao lost to Chen Qi and Ma Lin 11-6, 7-11, 11-6, 3-11, 9-11, 9-11.

Meanwhile, a Chinese trio and Olympic champion Ryu Seung Min dashed Europe's hopes of grabbing a men's singles medal by winning their quarter-final matches.

Defending champion Ma Lin beat Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus 11-9, 11-7, 12-10, 9-11, 11-6 after rallying in each of the opening three sets while South Korean Ryu defeated Germany's Timo Boll 11-9, 11-7, 11-3, 12-10.

Wang Hao produced a flawless performance in an 11-4, 11-9, 11-3, 11-3 whitewash of South Korea's Joo Se Hyuk and world No 2 Wang Liqin completed China's success with an 11-7, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8 win over compatriot Hao Shuai.—Agencies
