KARACHI, May 25: The open manholes on different roads in the metropolis are not only causing traffic congestion, but also seem like death traps for motorists. These have been lying open for a long time but the officials concerned have turned a blind eye towards them.
It has been observed that on the reconstructed roads in Garden, Orangi Town, Golimar and Rexer Lane the manholes are not level with the roads. The manholes are raised about two inches from the roads’ level, which causes obstacles in the smooth flow of traffic on the main thoroughfares.
Manholes without lids are observed almost across the city but the problem in Saddar Town is particularly acute. Lidless manholes are observed on the main thoroughfares like Shahrah-i-Liaquat, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road and around the City Courts.
In the area of Pak Colony, Manghopir Road, the manholes which have lost their lids due to traffic pressure have not been covered again.
In the areas where the roads have been reconstructed, the manholes have not been raised up to the roads’ level, which too create hindrances in the traffic flow.
On Shahrah-i-Liaquat, Aga Khan Road and Manghopir Road the sewers have been continuously overflowing for the last many months, creating problems for both the pedestrians and commuters.
