KARACHI: Growing anger over outages as city sizzles

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, May 22: He was screaming and beating his chest on a sizzling Tuesday afternoon in the balcony of his third floor apartment, attracting the attention of the passers by who were wondering what would be his next step?

He did not jump from the balcony. He was shouting and cursing the KESC for prolonged power outage due to which he had lost his patience. Inquiries from the people, who had gathered at the scene, in front of the apartment building in one of the alleys of Khayaban-i-Shamsheer leading to the beach, revealed that the area had been without electricity for almost 14 hours and no one from the KESC had come to their rescue.

Prolonged power outages have created serious water shortage in the city.

It has badly hit the students preparing for exams and the housewives, who have to suffer the agony of suffocating heat in apartment clusters.

Even UPS does not work properly as the increased frequency of load-shedding hardly provides the required time for recharging the attached battery.

A woman speaking from Block 1, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, complained there was no let up in power outage over the past week and it turned acute on Monday as the power supply was not available since 9am and yet to be restored as yet, late in the night. Residents of other areas also had similar complaints.

In F B Area’s blocks 5 & 6, people suffer from power outage almost five times in a day and the total period of power cuts comes to about 15 hours as a routine.

Meanwhile, Chairman Tariq Road Action Committee Siddique Memon has called a meeting of the Traders’ Action Committee on Wednesday to decide future course of action amid prolonged load-shedding.
