KARACHI, May 21: The suspension of public transport between Orangi and Baldia has caused great hardship to the residents and labourers. The transport link was suspended about a month ago with the closure of Shahrah-i-Orangi from Toori Bangash Police Post to Eidgah Mor of Baldia Town for reconstruction of the road.

The contractors closed the road for vehicular traffic, but did not arrange the alternate routes.

Transport operators tried to take the passengers to their destinations via different narrow streets, but the streets were also dug up which made movement of the vehicles impossible.

On the other hand, the pace of work on the road is slow that irked the transporters, who decided to suspend the link between the two towns.

Two culverts were planned on the Shahrah at Eidgah and near the Quaid School, but they are yet to be completed even after the lapse of two months.

The operators of Urban Transport Services have also limited the service to the Toori Bangash Police Post.

Shahrah-i-Orangi is an important link between the city areas and the Hub River Road. With the road closure, loaded trucks and trailers are now using the congested roads of the city to reach Orangi.

The businessmen, who were also perturbed over the issue, have stressed the need that work on the under construction roads be expedited so that the problems should not linger anymore.

The workers under the contractor on the site said they were following the instructions of the officials concerned and the work may be delayed as the contractor had been accorded many other projects as well in the city.
