DADU, May 17: Following the death of a new mother in the Civil Hospital on Wednesday night, the EDO (health) has constituted a three-member committee to investigate the causes of the death.

Relatives brought Mehboob Ali Soomro’s pregnant wife Zubeda to the hospital, where she died after giving birth. Talking to Dawn, the widower Soomro alleged that after the delivery, the lady doctor concerned was negligent towards the patient and told Zubeda to go home.

Threatening to commit suicide unless action was taken against those responsible, Mr Soomro alleged that the hospital staff was informed of the seriousness of Zubeda’s condition but took no action. As a result, he stated, the patient died at the hospital gates as she was being taken home.

Family members of the deceased and residents of their village Daro, Dadu taluka, staged a demonstration outside the hospital gates to protest against the alleged negligence of the doctors and staff.

However, according to EDO (health) Dr Dhani Bux Thebo, the patient’s relatives had her discharged from the hospital without doctors’ permission. Subsequently, when Zubeda started bleeding again at home, her husband brought her to the hospital, where she died, the official said.

The three-member investigation committee -- headed by district officer administration, health, Dr Sikander Ali Shah -- has been directed to submit a report within seven days.
