LONDON, May 17: The dollar strengthened against the euro and hit a three-month high against the yen on Thursday, as US weekly jobless claims data came in well below expectations.

In late European trading the euro was changing hands at $1.3498 against $1.3513 late on Tuesday in New York.

The dollar rose to 121.29 yen, compared to 120.81 yen in New York late on Wednesday, after earlier reaching 121.35 yen, its highest level in three months.

The euro and the pound fell against the dollar after new US data showed that the number of people filing new claims for unemployment insurance fell by 5,000 to 293,000 in the week ended May 12.—AFP
