KARACHI: Children’s film screened at European festival
KARACHI, May 15: As an air of normality returned to Karachi, the Windows on Europe film festival continued, after an interruption on Monday. British film Nanny McPhee and Dutch film Nynke were screened at the Goethe-Institut on Tuesday.
Although a children’s film, Nanny McPhee, directed by Kirk Jones, had enough entertaining moments to keep adults interested as well. Adapted from Christianna Brand’s Nurse Matilda books, the screenplay was written by acclaimed British actress Emma Thompson, who also starred in the title role.
Basically a fantasy tale, the film focusses on a certain Mr Brown (Colin Firth) and his brood of seven children, who have recently lost their mother. Mr Brown, an undertaker by profession, lives in a sprawling English country estate with his tribe, but after the passing of his wife, he finds balancing work and family incredibly hard.
The children, though cute, are little monsters who are experts at creating chaos and disorder, and have already driven 17 nannies out.
Along comes Nanny McPhee (Thompson) a lady with a magical touch who seems to appear out of thin air.
Though it might have been a turn-off for ‘serious’ film buffs, the gorgeous sets and period art direction made Nanny McPhee an enjoyable watch.—QAM
