Air attack kills 30 Afghans

KANDAHAR, May 9: Bombing by foreign forces has killed 20 to 30 Afghan villagers, a governor and witnesses said on Wednesday. The US-led forces confirmed they had called in ‘air support’ amid intense battles with Taliban in Helmand on Tuesday that had killed a number of militants and a coalition soldier. But it was not aware that civilians had been killed, spokesman Maj Chris Belcher said. The bombing began just before midnight, a villager, Noorullah, said.

“Around 30 people are dead,” he said. “The number might rise because there are still people under the debris.” He said most of the dead and wounded were women and children.—AFP
