ISLAMABAD, May 9: The local police claimed to have arrested eight people with arms and ammunition in its campaign against anti-social elements. Sources said the police had received information that a group of people armed with sophisticated weapons was assembling at Mera Baigwal area to settle a land dispute.

Shortly after being informed the police conducted a raid and arrested eight people and seized two Kalashnikovs, a 222 rifle, two repeater guns, two 30-bore pistols, a 12-bore gun, and 181 rounds. The men failed to produce licences for the weapons.

The sources said the people had purchased agriculture land at Mera Baigwal, however, they entered a dispute when some other people who also claimed to be the land owners.

According to the sources, it is a common practice in the area to deploy armed people to avoid occupation of land by other parties and some time such disputes also result in scuffles and violent clashes.

The Bhara Kahu police have registered separate cases against the detainees.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the police said a team of the Bara Kahu police arrested the eight men for carrying illegal weapons during a campaign against anti-social elements.
