KARACHI, May 6: Running true to her potential, public fancy three-year-old bay filly Phapha Kutni obliged punters by claiming the feature event in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Owned by Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara, Phapha Kutni set the pace right from the word go edging out her stable-mate mare Butter Fly by three-quarter-of a length. Saddled by Allah Judrio, she was ridden home by Ghulam Shabbir II.

Colt Moon Raker secured third place while grey colt Awan completed the frame.

Three favourites reigned supreme in a card of six while the remaining races turned out to be upsets.

Installed as favourite mare Jet Zone, who finished off the board on the past four occasions, posted a facile seven-and-a-half lengths victory over bay Charlie to pick up the opener. This was her second win of the year.

After galloping Jet Zone to a commendable victory, rider Ali Ehsan piloted favourite bay Canon Ball to a two-length victory to complete a fine double. Trainer Talib Hussain equally shared in a brace of winners.

Eleven-year-old chestnut mare Taneez pulled off the day’s first upset by scoring a long-awaited two-length win over bay Fascinate in the second race. Joint favourites Little Girl and Martini placed third and fourth.

Four-year-old bay colt Shan-e-Arab, with no form worth, posted a four-length victory over bay Jawan Bakht as Laat Sahib and Bul Bul, who were installed favourites, failed to find a place on the board.

Rider of Foolish Pleasure, Fahim K, was penalised with a one month suspension and a fine of Rs20,000 for unsatisfactorily riding his mount in the same race.

In a closely fought battle chestnut Sharp Cat beat Birj-ul-Arab by Neck to land the supporting event.
