Zanjeer outclasses Nosheen to capture day’s honour
By Aftab Gilani
LAHORE, May 6: The fancied roan colt, Zanjeer, lived up to his star billing when he defeated the filly Nosheen by half a length to land the feature event run over 1200m, during the day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the racecourse on Sunday.
Zanjeer owned by Khawaja M.Arif and backed at 60 to 100 confidently by the connections, rallied from behind in a dramatic burst of speed, to snatch the race from front-running Nosheen, leaving the race-goers mesmerized.
Lovely Gate and Key Of Luck completed the frame. This was the sixth and last race of the card.
Earlier the supporting and fifth event run over 1200 metres ended in a close finish between three contenders, Desert Queen, Shim Jim and Charismatic. The race was won by long shot dark-bay filly, Desert Queen, with M. Atif in the saddle.
As the favourite filly Shim Jim (Shahid Rehman up) and the colt, Charismatic were locked in a neck to neck battle, Desert Queen came from behind and surged past the two to beat Shim Jim by a neck. Charismatic, who was very badly ridden by jockey A. Imran , finished close third by a head’s margin.
After the race a section of the crowd held a mild demonstration demanding cancellation of the race until the “all clear” cone went up.
Javed Khalid's, bay filly, Honey Gal, ridden by jockey A. Imran outclassed her eight rivals to win the fourth race in a style of her own. She defeated Spiritual Song by two-and-a-half lengths.
The opener was won by the bay colt, Mirana Choice in a front-running display right from start till the last stride. Owned by Iftikhar-uz-Zaman, the odds on favourite Mirana Choice beat Junaid Rashid Rana's dark-bay colt Nommy The Great by two and a half lengths. This was Nomy The Great’s first try out.
Senator Waqar Ahmad Khan's bay colt, Willhewish, won the second race with his customary gameness defeating Safe And Sound by a big margin of a distance. The three-year-old colt, Willhewish, was partnered by the riding boy M. Atif, who later drove Desert Queen to a shock victory for the punters to complete his double.
Jockey Shahid Rehman, who lost thrice, on Born To Win, Spiritual Song and Shim Jim accredited himself with a double through Mirana Choice in the first and Zanjeer in the sixth and last race.
Shahid Rehman seems to be lacking in form or he is emulating the style of the leading English jockey, Pat Eddry, which he ia far cry. Trainer Ghulam Sarwar, who was seen wearing a neck collar sent out three winners, Willhewish, Desert Queen and Zanjeer, in the second, fifth and sixth race.
