KARACHI: UCs asked to play role for community uplift
KARACHI, May 6: Sindh Minister for Local Government, Katchi Abadis and Spatial Development Mohammad Hussain Khan says that the union councils have a vital role to play to achieve maximum benefits from the present local bodies system.
He was presiding over a meeting of nazims, naib nazims and officers of Landhi Town.
The minister said that as members of UCs were easily accessible, they had to bear any possible impact and reaction of a decision made at higher levels.
They actually are the first line of defence and barometer for the success of the present local government system, he observed.
The government was fully aware of the importance of UCs and as such the 178 UCs have been provided Rs9.6 million each for uplift works, he added. The minister asked councillors, naib nazims and nazims to maintain close liaison with people so as to apprise themselves about their problems well in time.
He also asked UC nazims to hold weekly open katchehry in any area of the union council along with officials of all civic agencies to resolve people's problems.
The minister directed officers to extend full support to the elected representatives of the local body institutions and deal with the people coming to them for solution to their problems politely and with utmost cooperation.
They should consider themselves as servants rather than rulers and improve their behaviours otherwise stern action would be taken against them, the minister warned.
ENCROACHMENTS: The Gulshan-i-Iqbal Town administration on Monday would start the grand operation for removal of vehicles and other encroachments along the main University Road from New Town Chowrangi to Gulshan Town offices.
The owners of vehicles and showrooms were given notices two months earlier to remove them voluntarily but they did not pay heed to it. Since the parked vehicles and other encroachments impeded development work, the town administration would remove all encroachments on Monday.
The reconstruction of University Road is going on and sewerage lines, storm water drains and water supply lines have been laid in this connection.
Town Nazim Wasay Jalil accompanied by Naib Nazim Shoaib Akhtar, TMO Shafique Rehman and others on Sunday visited the area and instructed the officials concerned for constructing bus stops and parking yards.—PPI
