KARACHI: European film festival kicks off today

KARACHI, May 6: A 10-day film festival titled ‘Windows on Europe’ will kick off here on Monday to mark Europe Day, celebrated on May 9 in the European Union.

The festival will continue till May 16 with films being shown daily at the Goethe-Institut.

The first film to be screened will be Herr Lehmann, directed by Leander Haußmann. Released in 2003, it is set in 1989 Berlin, during the days when the Berlin Wall still divided the city into communist East Berlin and allied West Berlin.

Adapted from a book by Sven Regener, the film has won two awards at the 2004 German Film Awards, for best supporting actor and best screenplay.

The screening will be followed by a reception. Sixteen films from 10 EU member states are scheduled to be screened. These are: Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom.
