High security for CJ’s convoy planned

ISLAMABAD, May 4: In order to strengthen security for Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry’s motorcade on Saturday, the Punjab government has made elaborate arrangements including deployment of sufficient police force, sweeping of the route and installation of security cameras, Dawn has learnt.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry is leaving for Lahore by road to attend a lawyers’ convention, though the government has tried to convince him not to embark on a road journey for security reasons.

The Islamabad Traffic Police have been directed to ensure a smooth passage to the CJ’s motorcade in the federal capital limits that end at Karal chowk. A well-equipped anti-terrorist squad of the ICT police would be accompanying the convoy.

A source said besides the deployment of security personnel, bomb disposal experts of the Civil Defence department would also carry out “technical sweeping” of the route.

“We are not taking any chances and will ensure his (Iftikhar Chaudhry’s) security. Besides taking other measures, around 350 security personnel would be deployed at a 50km strip along the G.T. Road,” a security official said.—Staff Reporter
