KARACHI: Karo-kari claiming many lives

KARACHI, May 4: At least one woman and three men were murdered every day in Sindh last month while at least two women and a man were killed every fourth day on the pretext of karo-kari, says a report compiled by the Aurat Foundation.

As many as 147 people, including 36 women, were killed in different parts of Sindh. Twenty of them, including 13 women, were killed on the pretext of karo-kari.

The report shows that at least four women were raped and as many gang-raped while rape attempt was made on one woman.

At least 11 women committed suicide while 11 others attempted to commit suicide owing to the increasing unemployment, forced and under-age marriages, domestic problems, violence and conflicts.

On the other hand, at least nine women were kidnapped while six others disappeared. Some 12 couples married through courts after leaving their homes and 12 women sought shelter owing to threats to their lives.

At least seven women were murdered by brothers-in-law on the pretext of karo-kari or domestic conflicts in Kashmore, Shikarpur, Larkana and Obaro.
