Women cricket association moves court against PCB

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, May 2: The Pakistan Women Cricket Control Association (PWCCA) on Wednesday moved a constitutional petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC) challenging the formation of the Women's Cricket Wing and the nomination of the national convener of women's cricket by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The petitioner, PWCCA president Shaiza Said Khan, through barrister Zafarullah Khan, prayed before the court that all acts of PCB regarding the establishment of women cricket, except holding inquiry or scrutiny as arbitrator, as appointed by the LHC, should be declared unconstitutional.

The petitioner also requested the court that the national convener of women's cricket be restrained from functioning till decision of the petition.

Shaiza contended that the PWCCA was a non-commercial organisation to help women pursue cricket. It conducted coaching sessions, held trials, participated in tournaments and financed itself through private sources, she said.

The petitioner said that on directive of the LHC a scrutiny committee had been formed to decide the real representative and sole governing body of women cricket in Pakistan.

When the scrutiny committee finalised its report and did not grant the petitioner its right of being the sole governing body of women cricket in Pakistan, it filed a civil suit before the civil court, which issued stay order in its favour.

But now the PCB without amending the constitution has set up a women's wing and has appointed a former principal of a girls’ college, having no cricketing background, as convener of the wing, which is unlawful, the PWCCA president alleged.
