KARACHI: Azeri woman shot dead in Clifton

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, May 2: An Azerbaijani woman was shot dead at an apartment in Clifton here on Wednesday by unidentified men, the police said.

Joannayal, 27, came from Azerbaijan some three months back and stayed with her countrywoman Izmira at an apartment in Chapel Garden in the Boating Basin police limits. Izmira had been here for quite some time. Both women were present at the apartment when someone rang the doorbell. Joannayal went to open the door and before opening it as she peeped through the door the gunmen opened fire at her.

The police said that 11 holes in the door indicated that as many shots were fired and no empties were found, which showed the shots were fired from a revolver. The watchman told the police that two men on a motorbike sped away after the incident.

Clifton town police officer Azad Khan told Dawn that it was a target killing. “Having reviewed the circumstances, I don’t think that the target was Joannayal as she had come here just three months ago. Izmira might be the target but the police have not immediately found any clue to the killers,” he added.

TENSTION: Fear and tension prevailed in parts of Lyari following the killing of an alleged gangster and a subsequent police operation launched against the gangsters in the area.

Due to the police raids, the gangsters had left the place but the area people were perturbed and they protested against the police for creating problems for the common people.

Besides, the deployment of police and the apprehension of exchanges of fire between the police and gangsters had heightened the fear and tension in the area.
