KARACHI, May 2: The Customs Anti-smuggling Squad seized a truck carrying 9,500 kilograms of hashish, according to Collector of Customs Preventive Mohammad Yahya.
He told newsmen here on Wednesday that a raid was carried out on a tip-off that a truck carrying the consignment of the contraband was on way to some foreign destination.
Surveillance was mounted and the truck was spotted at a section of the Northern Bypass. It was signalled to stop but the driver tried to speed away by diverting the vehicle towards a dirt track.
A chase followed during which the driver left his truck and ran away in the cover of darkness. The Customs squad seized the abandoned vehicle with its cargo.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guards recovered 137 kilograms of hashish and five kilograms of opium in a raid on a passenger coach at Uthal.
A Coast Guards team on routine checking stopped the coach and during inspection, found the contraband packed in a sack of betel nuts. The driver and conductor of the coach were taken into custody.
In a separate case, a suspect was arrested with 10 kilograms of opium at the Coast Guards’ Aghor check post.
