Govt urged to enforce EFA goals

By Our Correspondent

MITHI, April 30: Speakers at a seminar on Monday urged the government to take initiatives to implement Education For All (EFA) goals and strategies agreed upon by 185 countries in Dakar in April 2000.

The seminar on education was organised by Marooara Coordination Council at local gymkhana in collaboration with Pak Coalition for Education (PCE) as part of Global Action Week commemorations.

EDO of education Prof Aachar Abid said in his speech that the purpose of celebrating the week was to promote education as a basic human right and create awareness among people and stakeholders about channelising their efforts and resources to increase literacy ratio and ensure that no child remained deprived of education.

Noted educationist Haji Mohammad Daal said that policymakers should attach top priority to education and earmark adequate funds in the budget for education. They should also carry out strict monitoring of the funds’ usage to ensure transparency, he added.

"Teachers should work with commitment and dedication to impart knowledge to young generation," he stressed.

The Marooara Coordination Council Chairman Obhayo Junejo said that Pakistan was a signatory to Education For All (EFA) goals which aimed at expanding early childhood care and education, free and compulsory primary education for all, increase in adult literacy by 50 per cent, achievement of gender equality by 2015 and improvement in quality of education.

"The government should take initiative to promote education, implement Education For All (EFA) goals and strategies agreed upon by 185 world governments in Dakar in April 2000," Mr Junejo said.

DEO Apa Mumtaz said that parents should provide opportunity to their daughters to acquire knowledge. The seminar was attended by academics, teachers, students, representatives of NGOs and common people.
