HYDERABAD: Hospital ransacked after boy’s death

By Our Correspondent

HYDERABAD, April 28: Angry friends and relatives maltreated paramedics and doctors and ransacked furniture at the Liaquat University Hospital after a young boy, who was seriously injured in a road accident near Detha, Tandojam late Friday night, died in hospital on Saturday.

Reports said that Rashid, a resident of Landhi Karachi, and his three unidentified friends suffered serious injuries and were brought to the Civil Hospital.

They had arrived in Muslim town Phulelli to attend marriage in the area. While they were returning they forgot the actual route of Karachi and mistakenly proceeded towards Tandojam where the mishap took place. There were different accounts as to the cause of accident.

Hospital sources said that jugular vein of Rashid was seriously damaged and he was operated upon whereas his friends, Idrees and Imran claimed that there was a great delay in provision of treatment to injured with the result that Rashid's condition kept deteriorating.

They claimed that in fact doctors dealing with dental and surgery had a difference of opinion over nature of injuries that's why they couldn't decide who should take care of patients.

However, the patient was operated and according to additional medical superintendent (general), Dr.Kazim Shah, after Rashid, who was in his late 20s, had been operated upon was being shifted to the ward, his condition deteriorated and he breathed his last, provoking his relatives and friends.

They damaged the casualty's door and maltreated doctors and paramedics, holding them responsible for the death. Unrest and harassment prevailed among the paramedics, other patients and attendants after deceased's heirs reacted furiously.

MQM's MNA Pervez Qureshi also arrived there and pacified the enraged attendants of deceased. He ensured shifting of injured to Karachi immediately. He held a meeting with Medical Superintendent Dr.Khalid Qureshi in presence of heirs' relatives and doctors where the former blamed the latter for delaying provision of treatment.

The MS is reported to have ordered an inquiry which would consist of senior consultants, to be nominated soon. The committee would examine medical chart of patient, doctors' notes and report of medico legal officer (MLO) before giving its findings. SHO Market police station, Amir Jafri said that Arif Chohan has submitted a non-cognisable offence report with police following the incident. He said, no FIR was so far lodged from either side.
