Zafar sets new mark in triple jump

KARACHI, April 12: Pakistan Army’s Zafar Iqbal stole the limelight by setting a new national record in triple jump when he leaped to 16.45 metres to clinch gold on penultimate day in the 30th National Games track and field events at PSB Coaching centre on Thursday.

He surpassed the previous record of 15.95 metres created by Waseem Khan at Lahore on Jan 24, 2003.

Zafar’s team-mate Mohammad Waseem secured the silver with 15.76 metres while Naveed Iqbal of Wapda got the bronze with 15.13 metres.

This is the second national record in the four-day meet which concludes on Friday.

Earlier, Humera Akmal, also of Army, established a pole vault record clearing a height of 2.75 metres on the opening day.

Soldier Noushad Khan also stood tall when he completed a double by capturing 5000m gold clocking 14:56.4 sec. He gave Army the 10000m gold on Tuesday.

Army’s Dilshad Khan annexed the silver while the bronze went to Wapda’s Gulshan Masih.

The Army athletes were second to none when they pocketed the other three golds in discus throw and high jump (men) and 400m (women).

The Army athletes are enjoying commanding position in the men’s and women’s section. Overall they have amassed 21 golds, 12 silvers and five bronzes.

Wapda are trailing at the second spot with seven golds, 13 silvers and 18 bronzes.

1-Abdul Majeed (Navy) 22.7; 2-Rana Saghir Ahmed (Wapda) 23.0; 3-Verin Uchong (Sindh) 24.2.

(Heat 2):

1-M. Imran (Army) 22.7; 2-Talha Iftikhar (HEC) 23.3; 3-Yamin (Isb) 23.9.

(Heat 3):

1-Afzal Baig (Army) 22.3; 2-Shahid Manzoor (Navy) 23.5; 3-Jamil (Pol) 24.4.

(Heat 4):

1-Jaffer Shah (Wapda) 22.5; 2-Javed Iqbal (Rlys) 22.8; 3-Adeel Akhtar (Pun) 23.0.

Men high jump final:

1-Anwar Khan (Army) 1.97; 2-Mohammad Atiq (Army) 1.97; 3-Wajahat Ayaz (Pun) 1.97.

Women 400m final:

1-Bushra Parveen (Army) 55.5; 2-Nadia Nazir (Wapda) 57.0; 3-Rozina Shafqat (Army) 58.6.

Men discus throw final:

1-Basharat Ali (Army) 51.67; 2-Asim Aleem Randhawa (Wapda) 47.95; 3-Mohammad Javed (Army) 47.48.

Men triple jump final:

1-Zafar Iqbal (Army) 16.45; 2-Mohammad Waseem (Army) 15.76; 3-Naveed Iqbal (Wapda) 15.13.

Men 5000m final:

1-Noshad Khan (Army) 14:56.4; 2-Dilshad Khan (Army) 15:06.7; 3-Gulshan Masih (Wapda) 15:14.8.
