Navy bag two sailing golds

KARACHI, April 8: Water-oriented Pakistan Navy opened their 30th National Games campaign on a winning note when their sailors clinched two of the three gold medals in the sailing regatta at the PN Aquatic Club on Sunday. The third gold was won by PAF.

Competitions in Laser 4.7, Optimist boys and girls which commenced on Friday under moderate winds ended on the eve of games’ opening ceremony. The races were sailed on best of nine with one discard allowed.

Promising Abdul Rehman bin Nasir gave Navy their first gold of the games when he won the Optimist boys event. The silver and bronze went to Talha Nadeem and Mohammad Mustafa, both from PAF. A total of nine boats were sailed in the competition.

Ghazal Mir Masood (PAF), having a rich experience under her belt, annexed the Optimist girls gold. Maria Seher (PN) bagged the silver while Palwasha (PN) got the bronze.

Sabahatullah Babar (PN) topped the seven-boat fleet to land gold in Laser 4.7. Hussain Patel (PN) took the silver and Ujala Mir Masood (PAF) bronze.

Seven affiliated units of the POA – Navy, Army, PAF, Sindh, NWFP, HEC and Wapda – are competing for honours in sailing. Races in Enterprise,470, Laser Standard, Laser Radial, Mistral and Match Racing begins on Tuesday.
