Lady Conqueror set for repeat performance

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, March 30: Four-year-old bay filly Lady Conqueror is fancied to repeat her winning feat by returning with flying colours in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Saturday.

The filly from the stables of Syed Ismail Shah sprinted to one-and-a-half lengths victory under rider Ghulam Shabbir II in the previous outing.

Drawn in a strong field of 16 runners barring last minute withdrawals, she is expected to put up another bold show by finishing ahead of opponents. Jack In The Box and Arab Hi Arab should battle it out for places. The two finished on the board last Sunday.

A card of 10 races has been chalked out for the day. The first race starts at 12:00noon.

Two colts — Awan and Sindh Malook — are in contention for the days feature event and on course for a hat trick. The former won two races on trot with M. Nasir astride in January and will be making his appearance after a layoff. He will be ridden by Pervaiz Ali on Saturday if there’s no change at the last moment.

Similarly, Nasir who galloped Sindh Malook to two successive wins will be on board again to make it three-in-a-row.

On current form, Awan is our fancy to pick up spoils and oblige punters with another win.

Awan’s stable mate eight-year-old bay gelding Sher-e-Awan is poised to make amends by galloping to victory. He should be chased by Silent Love and another stable mate Queen Of Awan.

If allowed to run on merit, five-year-old dark bay horse The Choice Of The Day should make amends by sprinting to victory. He is likely to get opposition from Meri Paidagiree and Burnish Pride.

Miss Benish Hasan’s three-year-old bay filly, Be Jamalo should start clear favourite in a field of 10 contestants. Her likely challengers are Sweet Touch and Khyber.

Lucky Friend, a five-year-old bay horse, should overcome rivals to land the concluding race.

Mare Piyari Mehbooba who has not appeared on the board since long is rated to overcome bad patch by claiming the opener.

Colt Reyan The Great, chestnut Thanks Naeem and colt Laat Sahib are likely to atone to previous loss by winning the remaining races.

Meanwhile, racing fans have expressed their resentment on change of riders after declaration and termed the modus operandi as ‘unfair’.
