KARACHI: No leniency in plastic bag ban

KARACHI, March 30: Sindh Minister for Environment and Alternative Energy, Dr Saghir Ahmed on Friday warned that strict action will be taken against the sale and purchase of banned plastic bags.“The government will maintain the supremacy of law and no one will be allowed to take the law into his hands, no matter how influential he may be,” he told a meeting held to review enforcement of the ban on plastic bags.

He pointed out that use of plastic bags has been banned in the interest of citizens, while people can use paper and cloth bags as an alternative.

The minister called for increasing cooperation with the DDOs of city government in relation to enforcement of the ban on plastic bags of less than 30 microns.

He said the objective is to make Karachi a pollution-free city, for which a number of projects are in hand, while steps are also being taken to create greater public awareness on this count.—APP
