KARACHI, March 30: Residents of different localities in the metropolis have said that their areas were facing acute shortage of water. A complainant from Islam Nagar, Block 4-D, Orangi Town said that water was supplied to the area twice a month, causing people great problems. He said that there was no schedule for supply of water to the area, adding that uncertainty about water supply was now a permanent problem for residents.
He said that the problem has persisted for the last one year and KWSB officials in Orangi Town were aware of the water shortage, saying that applications were submitted to the officials concerned, yet no interest has so far been taken to solve the problem.
The XEN of KWSB at Orangi Town, when contacted, said that water was supplied to the area through gravity system with a gap of three to six days. If supply was delayed for 15 to 18 days, it would be very rare and as a result of some serious problem in the supply system.
When asked about the excessive wastage of water in different sectors of Orangi Town, the XEN said that work for repair of leakages was in progress, adding that Rs7 million were allocated by the town administration for maintenance of supply lines.
NORTH KARACHI: Residents of different apartments in North Karachi’s Power House Chaurangi area said that shortage of water was an old problem in the area, but it was aggravated during the last few weeks.
They said that those residing in flats were the worst affected, saying that they had to fetch water on shoulders.
GULSHAN: Another complainant from Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s Karachi Flats said that on one hand residents were facing shortage of water and on the other, water was extremely contaminated. He said that an application was submitted to the officials concerned, but to no avail, adding that the inhabitants of some 160 flats were facing water supply problems.
