QUETTA, March 27: The judicial tribunal probing the police baton-charge on lawyers in the provincial capital asked 36 lawyers on Tuesday to file a joint statement on Wednesday.

Former acting chief justice Javed Iqbal had taken suo motu notice of the incident when police baton-charged and tear gassed a lawyers’ rally in Quetta on March 21. Justice Lashari of the Balochistan High Court was appointed to probe and submit a report within seven days.

Three lawyers – Hadi Shakeel, Sakhi Sultan and Qahar Shah – appeared before the tribunal and sought one-day time to file statement.

The police department also submitted names of police officials to the judicial tribunal for evidence.

BOYCOTT: Lawyers continued the token boycott of court proceedings to protest against the suspension of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

They did not attend court proceedings in Quetta and other district headquarters from 10:30am to 11:30am.

Four lawyers also observed token hunger strike in the district bar room from morning till afternoon.
