LONDON, March 26: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has complimented the ARD and opposition parties on successful show of solidarity throughout the country with lawyers and judiciary to demonstrate their support for the cause of rule of law in Pakistan.
In a statement released here on Monday from the PML-N international headquarters, he appealed to political workers and civil society activists to show a similar unity and commitment on April 3, 2007, on the date of hearing of the chief justice by going to the Supreme Court in Islamabad.
He said: “The present struggle is a national struggle to defend the principles of rule of law and independence of judiciary.
“The destiny of Pakistani people depends on the outcome of this struggle.”
The statement further said: “The solidarity of opposition parties with the lawyers is not based on any political expediency but on matters of principle. It is something which concerns every citizen and Pakistani. Our future is supremacy of Constitution and rule of law.
“The heroic struggle of political workers, civil society activists, media, and lawyers has shown that despite the military rule the foundations of democratic culture are still strong and intact.
“The arrests of hundreds of political workers show nervousness of the regime and will not break the resolve of the nation. 2007 is the defining year for Pakistan and it will usher a new era of democratic process.
Our struggle is based on principles that the people are its owners and military must disengage from politics.”
