PESHAWAR, March 26: NWFP Governor Lt-Gen (R) Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai has said the Islamia College, Peshawar, functioning since 1913, has been catering to the educational needs of the Frontier province. The institution also played a leading role in the freedom movement.
Speaking as chief guest at the convocation of the college on Monday, the governor remarked that over the years the college has played the lead role in enabling the people participate in the political and socio-economic development of the province.
Mr Aurakzai, who is an old student of the college, said that an institution similar to the Islamia College was being established in Swabi as a public-private venture. This institution, he said, would be fully operational by 2013, so as to coincide with the centenary of Islamia College.
While referring to the historical importance of the college, the governor said that Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah held Islamia College in high esteem and his love for it could be judged from the fact that he donated one-third of his personal property to it.
Indeed, he added, the great Quaid had rightly envisioned the spread of knowledge throughout the region from this enviable seat of learning and the best way to pay homage to the Quaid would be to adhere to his guiding principles and his motto of Faith, Unity and Discipline and making Pakistan an impregnable fort of Islam.
While paying tribute to the founder of the college, Sir Sahibzada Abdul Qayyum, the governor said he established this institution on the pattern of the Mohammadan Anglo
Oriental College, Aligarh and it was built as a fine blend of a modern and oriental educational institution to bring the people of the area at par with the Muslims of the rest of the Indian sub-continent in terms of academic attainment and socio-economic development.
Referring to certain points raised by the principal of the college, Prof Dr Nisar Mohammad Nisar, the governor promised to take steps not only for further upgradation and expansion of the college but also for renovation of its historic architectural design under a phased programme.
The governor, while giving advice to the graduates, said: “Don't indulge in any misdemeanour which could bring a bad name to your esteemed institution. Be always proud of your college and do things which should add to the prestige of the college.”
This, he added, will surely be the best way to repay what this great institution has given them.
Vice-Chancellor of Peshawar University Prof Dr Haroon Rasheed thanked the governor for gracing the occasion by his presence while the principal highlighted the achievements of the college as well as its future needs.
A total of 130 graduates were awarded bachelor degrees in various disciplines. Medals were also given to those who had achieved distinctive positions in various disciplines. Farooq Khan got a Gold Medal for achieving first position followed by Saddam Hussain who got second position and was awarded silver medal. Mohammad Fawad and Khursheed Alam were given Bronze Medals for getting third position.
Khursheed Ahmad also got medals for best athlete of the year both at the Intermediate Board and University level competitions.
Farrukh Ejaz was given a gold medal for achieving 2nd position at the national level in the 3rd International Kangaroo Mathematics Contest held under the auspices of the Government College University, Lahore.
Medals were also given to Waqar Ali Shah, Saad Hameed, Irfan Khan, Waqas Ehsan Butt, Ubaidullah and Farrukh Hijaz for achieving distinction in the same competition.—APP
