FAISALABAD, March 26: Notorious gangster Jehangir, alias Jango, wanted in cases of kidnap for ransom, murders, attempts on life and robberies, has become a symbol of terror for the residents of several localities of Tandlianwala.

Police have announced Rs100,000 head money on the outlaw or for those who pass on any information leading to his arrest.

In their latest strike made a week ago, the gang members kidnapped two sisters. Five months ago, Jango gang had kidnapped Shehnaz of the same family.

However, she managed to escape from the confinement after two months and returned home. Saddar SP Touqeer Hayat said Jango’s brother Gudoo had kidnapped Shehnaz, and her escape angered him.

Mr Hayat claimed police had arrested some of Jungo’s accomplices, who were expected to provide a clue to him. He said several police teams had been constituted to arrest the outlaw. He urged the people to join hands with police to capture the criminal.

The hardened criminal is wanted by police in 48 cases including those of murder, attempt to murder, police encounter, kidnapping and other heinous crimes.

Sources said a police inspector had arrested Jango a month ago, but the criminal fled away. After the incident, police tightened the security of the inspector fearing that the gangster might retaliate.

When Dawn correspondent asked the people about the activities of Jango, they first chose to keep mum. On insisting, a resident requesting anonymity said the area became a “no-go locality” after 7pm.

“Police ask us to inform them whenever we see the gangsters in the area. But, when somebody informs police, they arrive at the crime scene after two to three hours.”

He said the people were worried about the safety of their school going children as Jango was reckless outlaw.

Another man said, “Jango can kill anyone at his will and loot our belongings.”

Two months ago, Jango ambushed policemen and killed two constables. The killings led to the suspension of an inspector.

DIG (operations) Muhammad Aslam Tareen said police had evolved a strategy to nab the criminal.

MNA Rajab Ali Baloch and MPAs Shahid Khalil Noor and Mian Khalid Watto, elected from the area belong to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League.
