KARACHI: Punjab CM says govt not worried about SJC decision

KARACHI, March 25: Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that the government is not worried over the Supreme Judicial Council’s conclusion on the presidential reference against Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
“Let them (SJC) decide the case. The decision will come and there will be nothing for the government to worry about,” he said while talking to newsmen at the Muslim League House soon after arriving here on Sunday.
Accompanied by Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim and other PML Sindh leaders, Mr Elahi maintained that no one had the right to influence SJC through strikes and protests. “Let them proceed with their work and wait for the judgment,” he added.
Mr Elahi, who is also the PML Punjab chief, is on a visit to the metropolis on Dr Arbab’s invitation. He was warmly welcomed by a large number of PML workers at the airport, from where he travelled to the Muslim League House in a procession.
He avoided responding to a question about Kalabagh Dam, saying: “Today’s issue is the Supreme Judicial Council, and not the Kalabagh Dam.”
He also declined to state whether the Punjab government had provided any evidence concerning the charges against Justice Chaudhry. “Any evidence is now a part of the court record, and I cannot comment on it,” he said.
About the PML, Mr Elahi said now when the party was gaining strength across the country, all minor issues would be resolved. “Both Pakistan and the PML government are now strong enough to cope with any situation,” he observed.
Earlier, Dr Arbab said that Mr Elahi’s visit was aimed at promoting harmony and solidarity between the two provinces, pointing out that he himself had been visiting Punjab frequently with the same view.
