Adil reaches second round

KARACHI, March 23: Teenager Adil Kohari, runners-up of a national-ranking tournament in January, cruised into boys’ U-13 singles second round chalking up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Arsalan Allahwala in the Sindh ranking tennis tournament – second of the year – at the CDGK Sports Complex on Friday.

Joining him in the next round were Shahbaz, Yayha Essa, Uzair A Qadir and Shayan Nadeem. With the exception of Uzair who got a walkover, others chalked up straight wins over their opponents.

Mustafa Zaidi, Sunny William and Ahad Hassan were stretched fully by their opponents before advancing into juniors U-17 singles second round.

Mustafa overcame the challenge from Talha Saeed before handing him a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 defeat. Sunny recovered from a set down to beat Nameer Shamsi 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 while Ahad got past Ibrahim Tawab 0-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Top seed Nomi Qamar, who last represented the country in Asia Oceania Zone group II relegation round against China last year, is drawn to meet Hussain Jasani in the second round fixtures on Saturday. Nomi got a bye in the first round.

Boys U-13 singles (first round): Adil Kohari bt Arsalan Allahwala 6-1, 6-1; Shahbaz bt Shahzaib Nasir 6-2, 6-0; Yayha Essa bt Sheryar Ahmed 6-3, 6-2; Uzair A. Qadir w/o Ahmed Hassan Khan; Shayan Nadeem bt M. Yousuf 6-0, 6-1.

Men’s singles (first round): Asadullah bt Umair bin Shuja 6-2, 6-2; Hasham Khan bt Adnan Yousuf 6-1, 6-0; Hussain Jasani bt Steve Jonathan 6-2, 6-0.

Saturday’s fixtures: Boys U-15 singles 9am; boys U-11 singles 11am; boys U-15 doubles, juniors U-17 singles 12noon; boys U-13 singles, men’s singles 2pm.
